Udate Tuesday May 29

Attack of the squash! They are taking over! I'm wondering if I can prune them back a little? Would it hurt the plants? I've never grown squash before, I thought I could vine them up my netting, but it doesn't seem like they are a climbing vine... oops. Tomatoes are doing great. I have my first tiny baby tomatoes! I'm so excited! :)

I'm a day late on my pictures this week. It looks like rain, hopefully the garden will get a good soaking (free!) The tomatoes are coming along nicely and the squash is really growing! The eggplant is struggling, not sure if it's going to make it. I'm adding some compost today, the soil has settled and it's not as deep as I'd like. The cute dog is the culprit that was digging things up, so far the fencing is working.

I think you can click on the pics to see it larger. Any advice appreciated as I'm new to square ft gardening and still fairly new to gardening in general :) Something is nibbling tiny holes in my leaves, I'm trying to stay away from pesticides so uncertain what to do about it. We've had to reinforce the fencing since one of dogs discovered she could squeeze in and dig!
The little container has sugar snap peas, I'm going move it near the wall and make a trellis of some kind and let it climb.

My garden begins!

I'm so excited to be having a garden this year. Dh helped me build my boxes and make my planting mix. I read the New Square Foot Gardening this spring and decided to give it a try. Our soil here is not very productive. This method uses a soil-less mix of peat moss, vermiculite and compost. I'm hopeful that I'll have a good harvest this year. I'm planning to keep my records here and post picture updates. Good gardening to all!
